SISU is a Finnish term, meaning strength, perseverance and resilience. Could be taken as similar in meaning to the English saying, ‘Just do it.’ There is a taste of stoicism within the word, something that the greek used to promote and teach as the best way to lead one’s life. Specially in the midst of adversity times would be this be the optimal concept, but only if duly applied. SISU is not often used in other countries but it embraces completely my own life. Enduring changes, adapting, moving between countries and finding always a dwelling wherever life took me.
Reflects probably both the harsh and rough side of life and one’s resilience as well as the determination and perseverance one is willing to pursue to achieve goals. Personally, I agree on a good combination of both sides, though the latter is key. Courage, bravery, are certainly virtues to seek upon and embrace !
SISU is definitely not the only term one may use in their own particular way. The danish have their own ‘Hygge‘ term which is more used to apply for cozyness, familiarity, but indeed not easy to find the specific translation.
